Rotating creative without losing a comparable test
Check current rotation behaviour, keep creative conditions comparable and avoid mistaking optimised delivery for a clean message test.
To compare creative messages, give each variant comparable opportunities and check how the serving system allocates them. Rotation alone does not make a fair test: variants may enter different placements, receive unequal delivery or lead to different page experiences.
Define the comparison first
State the question, primary outcome and review period before launch. Record creative IDs, sizes, landing pages and start dates. If landing pages differ, the comparison covers the full ad-to-page experience; it cannot isolate the ad message alone.
Use the same serving size for the main message comparison where possible. Different sizes can enter different placements, and those placements may attract different audiences. Where several sizes are needed, assess like-sized variants together and report other sizes separately.
Check what controls rotation
Rotation and creative-optimisation controls differ by platform and can change over time. In Display & Video 360, check the current controls in Google Display & Video 360 Help, “Creative optimization”. Do not assume a previous manual control or rotation rule is still available.
Where an even rotation option is available, use it to give variants comparable opportunities, then verify served impressions by creative ID. Automated bidding and auction outcomes can still produce unequal served-impression shares, so the setting is not a guarantee of equal delivery.
Campaign Manager 360 also has rotation controls; check Google Campaign Manager 360 Help, “Manage creative rotation” for current options. If Campaign Manager 360 and Display & Video 360 are linked, confirm which system controls allocation before setting up the comparison.
Monitor what served
Calculate each creative’s share of served impressions within the comparison, then compare shares across the same dates and like-sized variants. Look for a placement or audience mix that differs materially; flag unequal allocation or a material mix difference rather than reading raw totals as equal-exposure results.
Check that click routes, measurement labels and outcome definitions remain consistent. Log any change to a creative, offer, landing page, allocation rule or measurement event. If a correction is necessary, decide whether the comparison must restart or whether periods should be analysed separately; a mid-flight change should not disappear inside a combined result.
Interpret the result carefully
A higher click or conversion count may reflect greater delivery. Compare rates with consistent denominators and definitions, and assess whether each variant received enough relevant exposure to support a useful conclusion. Uneven allocation, small samples or differing contexts may leave the comparison inconclusive.
If the platform is optimising towards predicted performance, describe the report as performance under that allocation. A causal claim about the creative message requires a test design that controls the competing differences.
