Campaign Setup

Programmatic campaign setup

Turn an approved programmatic brief into a checkable hierarchy, serving controls, schedule, creative assignments and activation record.

Turn the approved brief into the settings that govern serving. Compare the saved configuration with the approved requirements before activation.

Map the brief to the buying hierarchy

Record the approved outcome and KPI, authorised spend and cost definition, flight and reporting time zone, Australian markets, buying routes, required exclusions, formats, creative IDs and measurement event. Mark which requirements need approval to change. This setup map is for an existing brief, not a substitute for writing one.

Use the campaign, insertion-order and line-item setup documentation for the DSP used for the buy. Check how its settings are organised and where each requirement needs to be configured. In Display & Video 360, use the documented creation guides to set up a campaign, an insertion order and a line item, then compare the saved configuration with this setup map.

Build order: campaign, insertion order, line item — then compare

  1. Set up the campaignRecord the approved outcome and the flight dates that govern serving
  2. Set up the insertion orderApply the authorised spend and the budget and pacing settings that constrain delivery
  3. Set up the line itemApply geography, inventory, audience rules, required exclusions, creative IDs and the measurement event
  4. Compare the saved configurationCheck each saved setting against the setup map that came from the approved brief

Verify in the saved configuration before activation

Put limits where they govern delivery

In Display & Video 360, use the platform’s budget and pacing guide alongside the saved settings to confirm how budgets constrain delivery and how spend is handled. Compare the saved budget and pacing settings with the authorised spend and approved flight; do not assume that a planning field acts as a serving limit.

Check the status, dates and budgets at each relevant level in the platform before activation. Confirm that the saved settings match the approved flight and authorised spend.

Review inherited targeting and inspect each saved line item. Keep required exclusions distinct from optional targeting so a later reach adjustment does not remove a fixed requirement.

Confirm the launch conditions

Write dates and cut-offs with a named time zone. For a flight across Australian daylight saving, check the intended local hours against the platform's time-zone basis. Allow time for creative review and verify that each planned asset is approved, assigned and eligible for the intended buying routes.

Have the trader and approver record the IDs and settings checked, unresolved dependencies, owner and approval time. Hold activation if a fixed requirement is missing, the governing budget or dates are wrong, the measurement event is unready, or the required creative set cannot serve.

A preview, estimate or active status alone does not establish expected delivery. After activation, review initial delivery against the agreed reporting cut-off.

Hold activation if any of these is true

  • A fixed requirement is missing from the saved configuration
  • The governing budget or the governing dates are wrong
  • The measurement event is unready
  • The required creative set cannot serve

Check personal-information handling

If campaign configuration or audience data involves personal information, identify which organisation is responsible for handling it and have the relevant privacy reviewer confirm whether the Privacy Act applies. The OAIC says the Privacy Act 1988 regulates how Australian Government agencies and organisations with annual turnover above $3 million, as well as some other organisations, handle personal information.

The Act includes 13 Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), which apply to some private sector organisations and most Australian Government agencies. Record the reviewer’s decision and any required data-handling conditions alongside the activation checks; do not assume that every organisation or campaign is covered in the same way.

Privacy Act basics for campaign and audience data

  • $3 millionAnnual turnover above which the Privacy Act 1988 generally regulates how an organisation handles personal information (some other organisations are covered too)
  • 13Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) in the Act, applying to some private sector organisations and most Australian Government agencies
  • OAICThe regulator whose guidance states how the Privacy Act 1988 applies to agencies and organisations

In this guide

  1. Building a readable campaign naming structureChoose a clear campaign, insertion-order and line-item naming pattern that helps traders read reports and find saved records.
  2. Grouping line items without fragmenting the budgetDecide which programmatic buys need separate line items and check how a shared insertion-order budget affects them.
  3. Setting a campaign schedule across Australian time zonesTranslate Australian local campaign hours into platform settings and check flight dates around daylight saving.
